Video Licks: PURL Crashes The Boys’ Club in This Pixar Animated Short

Could Pixar’s SparkShorts’ new animated short be a more perfect and adorable (I can’t resist some crochet humor) metaphor for women making strides in male-dominated workplaces? I think not. PURL, directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan, takes place at a company, aptly named B.R.O. Capital, where a new hire and pink ball of yarn named Purl (voiced by Bret Parker) is ready to get to work. She soon learns how tough it is fitting into her new surroundings and must take aggressive steps to make herself recognized. After Purl has earned the respect of her co-workers, it’s not long before she takes another ball of yarn under her wing, injecting more inclusivity into the company. Per the animation giant, the SparkShorts films were “designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows. These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.” Keep up the great work!
